How to Set Up MetaMask Step by Step

What is MetaMask?

MetaMask is a free browser extension and mobile app that acts as your gateway to the decentralised web (Web3). It lets you store Ethereum ($ETH) and ERC-20 tokens, interact with DeFi protocols like Uniswap and Aave, buy NFTs on OpenSea, and connect to hundreds of blockchain applications — all without sharing your private keys with any website.

As of 2026, MetaMask has over 30 million active users and supports dozens of EVM-compatible networks including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, and Optimism.

Step 1 — Install MetaMask

MetaMask is available as a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and Edge, as well as a mobile app for iOS and Android.

1. Go to metamask.io (always verify the URL — phishing sites mimic this page).
2. Click Download for [your browser] and install the extension from the official browser store.
3. Pin the MetaMask fox icon to your browser toolbar for easy access.

Warning: Never install MetaMask from a link in an email, social media post, or advertisement. Only use metamask.io.

Step 2 — Create a New Wallet

1. Click the MetaMask fox icon and select Create a new wallet.
2. Agree to the terms of service.
3. Create a strong password (this unlocks MetaMask on your device, but does NOT protect your funds if someone gets your seed phrase).
4. Watch the short security video MetaMask shows — it explains why your seed phrase is critical.

Step 3 — Back Up Your Secret Recovery Phrase (Seed Phrase)

This is the most important step. MetaMask will show you a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase (also called a seed phrase or mnemonic). This phrase is the only way to recover your wallet if you lose access.

• Write it down on paper — not in a screenshot, not in a notes app, not in email.
• Store the paper in a safe, fireproof location. Consider two copies in different locations.
• Never share it with anyone — not support staff, not friends, not a website.
• Confirm the phrase by selecting the words in order as MetaMask prompts.

If you lose your seed phrase and lose access to your device, your funds are gone permanently. There is no password reset in crypto.

Step 4 — Fund Your Wallet

Your new MetaMask wallet comes with a unique Ethereum address (starting with 0x). To add funds:

• Click Buy inside MetaMask to purchase $ETH directly via MoonPay or Transak (card fees apply).
• Or copy your wallet address and send $ETH from an exchange like Coinbase or Kraken to this address.
• Make sure you send $ETH on the Ethereum network — sending $ETH on the wrong network means your funds won't appear unless you add that network to MetaMask.

Step 5 — Add Custom Networks (BNB Chain, Polygon, etc.)

MetaMask defaults to Ethereum Mainnet, but you can add other networks:

1. Click the network dropdown at the top of MetaMask (shows "Ethereum Mainnet").
2. Click Add network and then Add a network manually.
3. Enter the network details (RPC URL, Chain ID, currency symbol). Popular networks are pre-listed under Popular custom networks.

Common networks to add: BNB Smart Chain (for Binance DeFi), Polygon (low-fee transactions), Arbitrum One and Optimism (Ethereum Layer 2s).

Step 6 — Connect to a DApp

When you visit a Web3 site (like Uniswap, OpenSea, or a crypto game), click Connect Wallet on the site and select MetaMask. A MetaMask popup will ask you to approve the connection — always read what permissions the site is requesting before approving.

MetaMask Security Best Practices

• Use a dedicated browser profile for MetaMask to isolate it from everyday browsing.
• Enable MetaMask's Phishing Detection feature in Settings.
• Never approve transactions you don't understand — malicious dApps can drain your wallet.
• For large holdings, use a hardware wallet (Ledger/Trezor) paired with MetaMask — this keeps your private keys offline while still using MetaMask's interface.
• Revoke unused token approvals regularly at revoke.cash.

Mobile MetaMask vs Browser Extension

Both versions share the same seed phrase, so you can use the same wallet on your phone and desktop. The mobile app includes a built-in browser for accessing DeFi on the go. The desktop extension is generally more feature-rich and easier to use with complex DeFi protocols.
